ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The San José Youth Commission is an appointed body of 11 youth, 14-20 years old, modeled after the City of San José, City Council. They are recognized as the official youth advisory group to the City Council and the Department of Park, Recreation and Neighborhood Services. Youth Commissioners are involved with policy recommendations concerning youth. They support the development of youth who desire to serve their community through active civic participation and constructive decision-making by maintaining a Youth Advisory Council in their district.  Their mission is to raise youth knowledge and awareness of their responsibility to become informed and active members of society.  Their vision is that San Jose youth have an influential and respected voice through civic engagement.   

WHY INTERN WITH US?

As an Intern, you will be a key component in assisting San Jose Teens find their voice by informing and encouraging them to participate in the San Jose Youth Commission.  You will also gain a greater understanding of how teens view city issues and help guide them through their civic engagement opportunities.   

PROJECT DESCRIPTION & OUTCOMES

These (three) positions are responsible for providing direct and specialized support to the San Jose Youth Commission.  Successful candidates will be required to work some evening and weekend hours and assists with the following:

  • Conducts surveys and compiles data for youth commission use.
  • Assist commissioners and staff to analyze and prepare reports.
  • Participates in budget preparation and review.
  • Assist in researches information that is vital to the Commission.
  • Conduct outreach efforts to High Schools and youth service organizations
  • Assist youth commissioners with recruitment for district specific youth advisory councils.
  • Interface with variety of city, law enforcement, and community and school groups on a regular basis.
  • Assist with establishing and maintaining a district specific youth advisory council
  • Assist with mentoring and youth leadership trainings
  • Assist with the development and implementation of district specific youth commission work plans.
  • Build and establish working relationships with High School District throughout the city in an effort to promote the Youth Commission mission and vision.
