Military Times EDGE Names Union Pacific Railroad Among 50 Best for Vets Employers

Omaha, Neb., August 09, 2010 – Military Times EDGE has named Union Pacific Railroad among the 50 Best for Vets 2010 Employers. The publication ranks Union Pacific No. 10 on its list.

“We are honored to receive this recognition and take pride in being an employer of choice for members of our armed forces,” said Barb Schaefer, Union Pacific senior vice president – Human Resources. “Union Pacific has found that military veterans, who served in a large, diverse and safety-sensitive organization, operating 24/7, adapt well to the challenges of railroad operations. In addition, military training in areas such as aviation electronics and diesel engine mechanics provide great skills that easily are transferrable to Union Pacific’s diesel electrician, diesel mechanic and work equipment mechanic positions.”

Best for Vets 2010 Employers were selected based upon veteran recruiting, training and mentoring practices; reserve policies; and corporate culture’s representation, retention, and support of veterans and military personnel.

Earlier this year, G.I. Jobs ranked Union Pacific No.1 on its Top 100 Military Friendly Employers list. Since 2005, Union Pacific has hired approximately 5,000 armed forces veterans.

About Union Pacific

Union Pacific Corporation owns one of America’s leading transportation companies. Its principal operating company, Union Pacific Railroad, links 23 states in the western two-thirds of the country. Union Pacific serves many of the fastest-growing U.S. population centers and provides Americans with a fuel-efficient, environmentally friendly and safe mode of freight transportation. Union Pacific’s diversified business mix includes Agricultural Products, Automotive, Chemicals, Energy, Industrial Products and Intermodal. The railroad emphasizes excellent customer service and offers competitive routes from all major West Coast and Gulf Coast ports to eastern gateways. Union Pacific connects with Canada’s rail systems and is the only railroad serving all six major gateways to Mexico.
