Veterans spend fruitful years of their lives in the armed forces to serve the nation. While performing their duties, some of them may have suffered permanent disability, while some others may have breathed their last while on active duty.

In order to honor the services of the veterans, the government gives them preference in employment, when they are relieved from active duty under honorable conditions. In case of disabled or deceased veteran, preference in job is given to the widow, unmarried widow or the mother of the veteran.

As a veteran, you can apply for the jobs in three categories namely:

Competitive Category: This is the most common method of employment. Veterans will apply for a position and will have to fill in form SF 15. In this form, you will have to prove your status as a veteran. You can be awarded 5 to 10 points for having the status of a veteran. As the name suggest, in this category, you will be competing with the other eligible candidates.
Non competitive category: This category is to be filled in only by the veterans. To qualify for this post, a veteran must be disabled to an extent of 30% or more. There are no laid down procedures for appointment in this category. The sole authority will lie in the hands of the appointing agency. However, if there is more than one candidate for the same post, then the principle of veteran preference will apply, meaning a veteran who has scored more points will get the job.
Merit Promotion: In this category, the veteran will compete with the other federal employees. The principle of preference is not applicable in this case.
