Duties

Major Duties: Incumbent’s primary duties are the performance of law enforcement work in the preservation of the peace, the prevention, detection and investigation of crimes occurring on Veterans Administration controlled property, arrest of violators, the control of traffic, the provision of assistance for citizens in emergency situations, including the protection of personnel, civil rights and VA zoned or controlled property. The VA Police Officer assures compliance with federal, state, country and municipal laws and ordnances as they pertain to VA property and agency rules and regulations pertaining to law enforcement work. Duties include, but are not limited to the following:
Distinguishes and properly classifies criminal or civil violations that may occur.
Conducts foot patrol and/or vehicle patrol for a prescribed patrol area over the course of a regular shift.
Writes uniform offenses reports covering incidents on his/her shift.
Informs individuals about their rights as victims and witnesses.
Reponds to calls or alarms involving crimes in progress or just discovered.
Obtains statements.
Arrests violators caught in the act or who readily admit to guilt.
Issues citations for personally observed violations of the law, rules or regulations.
Pursues and apprehends persons fleeing a crime scene or attempting to resist arrest.
Subdues individuals causing disturbances.
Take charge of a crime scene or accident, reports and/or fixes unsafe conditions. Coordinates with other law enforcement agencies.
Provide protective escort to personnel as needed.
Provide advice to personnel on crime prevention.
Work Location: VAMC, Canandaigua, NY, Incumbent would be required to cover the Rochester Outpatient Clinic as well as VAMC Canandaigua as agency requests.
Work Schedule: Full-Time, DAYS VARY/ROTATING SHIFTS/INCLUDES WEEKENDS AND HOLIDAYS. Shifts include: 12 and 8 hour tours PERMANENT.
Qualifications and Evaluations
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Qualification Requirements: Qualification requirements are in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Operating Manual, Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Group Coverage Qualification, positions, GS-0083 series. To qualify at the GS-6 level you must have had one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-5 level. Specialized experience is experience in or related to this current position; this experience should have provided the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of this job successfully. An example of specialize experience is experience gained while working in a police setting.
Selective Placement Factors: (skill, knowledge, ability or other worker characteristic basic to- and essential for – satisfacotry performance of the job). Selective Placement Factors (SFP) are a prerequisite to appointment and represent minimum requirements for a position. Applicants who do not meet it are ineligible for uther consideration. The SPF’s for this vacancy are: 1 Must have arresting authority 2. Must have a current valid driver’s license.
Time in Grade Requirements: Candidates must have completed a minimum of 52 weeks in a position no lower than the GS-5 level for eligibility at the GS-6 level. This rule may not apply to applicants applying under the Veterans Readjustment Act or 30% disabled authorities. These candidates, however, must still meet all other qualification requirements.

Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-6 level.
