Food service workers perform duties that require a wide knowledge of food service operations including food and nourishment preparation, tray assembly, tray delivery and pickup, ware washing and sanitation.

Duties

Assembles a limited number of salads following simple instructions that require only a few ingredients.  Prepares serving line for tray service and breaks down serving line after tray service.  Places items such as diet kits, eating utensils, and foods on trays as designated by menus and tray tickets.  Pushes tray delivery carts to distribute and collect trays.  Transports trays via battery operated cart to and from the CLC and distributes trays and collects trays from rooms and dining room tables.  Prepares uncooked items following simple instructions.  Prepares cold sandwiches and packs them with other ready to serve assembled foods for bag lunches.  Assembles and distributes ready to serve nourishments.  Cleans general equipment, work areas, and dining room tables and chairs, sweeps and mops floors.  Uses battery operated floor scrubber in the main kitchen.  Scrapes soiled trays, sorts, stacks, and racks tray ware for dishwashing, and pre-scrubs food preparation equipment for pot and pan washing.  Stores clean equipment in designated areas.  Empties trash and compacts it in automatic trash compactor.  Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Evaluations

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Your background must demonstrate experience in preparing and serving, understanding food terminology, measurements, and serving information, knowledge of sanitation standards and personal hygiene.

PHYSICAL EFFORT:  The position requires performance of work which involves light to moderate physical effort, and is subject to continuous standing and walking, and frequent stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling and bending.  Frequently lifts or moves objects weighing up to 40 pounds and occasionally lifts or moves objects weighing more than 60 pounds.  The incumbent performs heavy work, such as scouring and scrubbing large size cooking utensils and pushing heavy carts and trucks in unloading, storing and delivering supplies.  May be required to work on ladders and use power-cleaning equipment.

WORKING CONDITIONS:  The work is performed in kitchen areas where the steam and heat from cooking and dishwashing equipment often cause uncomfortable high temperatures and humidity.  The work area is well lighted but usually noisy from food service activities, and there is danger of slipping on floors from food or beverages and from floors recently mopped.  Incumbent is regularly exposed to hot liquids, sharp cutting blades, hot working surfaces and extreme temperature changes when entering walk-in refrigeration or freezing units. May be unknowingly exposed to patients who have contagious disease.

EXPERIENCE:  A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position.  Evidence of specialized experience which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position, must be supported by detailed descriptions of your experience on your resume or OF-612.   Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C (www.opm.gov/qualifications/x-118c).

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT:  Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire.  Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated.  The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the questions.  The screen-out element: Ability to do the work of a Food Service Worker without more than normal supervision.
