CAREER CHANGER ADVICE

If you are an experienced worker looking for a Federal job, you are in good company. More than 40 percent of the people hired by the Federal Government last year were experienced workers over the age of 35. These tips will help you to get credit for your expertise.

• Estimate your GS level. As mentioned in this article, the Federal Government classifies positions according to the complexity of their job duties and their level of responsibility. People qualify for a given level based on education, experience, or a combination of both. The most common classification system is the General Schedule (GS). To find your GS level, use the table on page 6 to estimate the level you qualify for based on education alone. If you also have relevant experience, your GS level will be higher than that. If you have had relevant managerial responsibilities or do complex work independently, you might qualify for a GS-12 or above. To be certain, read the job descriptions in vacancy announcements.

• Understand job requirements. Vacancy announcements often say that a worker needs experience equivalent to a particular GS level. A vacancy announcement at the GS-12 level, for example, might say that you need 1 year of experience at the GS-11 level. Some announcements give examples of what that experience could be. Others don’t. The simplest way to know if you qualify for a job is to read the job duties. If the work described there is only slightly more complex or responsible than work you have done in the past, you might be eligible for the position.

If some of the required experience for a job seems unique to the Federal Government, explore further by calling the agency or the contact person for the position. You might learn that your private-sector experience meets the requirement.

• Be flexible about titles. If you want to be a manager or supervisor, do not limit yourself to openings with those words in the job title. Jobs with widely varying levels of responsibility are often listed under the same title.

• Be specific about past experience. Human resources managers will study the details of your application to decide if you qualify for a job. They will compare your past work to the kinds of tasks performed at different GS levels. Managers will pay close attention to the amount of time you spent in each job. They usually will estimate exactly how many months or years you have done each major job task.

When creating a resume or writing statements about your skills, show your level of expertise by explaining who you reported to or worked with and how your work was used.

• Explain past job titles. Use job titles that clearly describe what you did. You may want to put the equivalent Federal title in parentheses next to your actual job titles.

• Consider Senior Executive Service. Finally, if you have substantial experience in high-level leadership positions, you might qualify for the Senior Executive Service (SES). SES positions require you to answer a set of standard questions about your leadership ability. A review board established by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management will certify your qualifications based on your answers and your experience. For more information, see www.opm.gov/ses or call (202) 606-1800.

U.S. Forest Service Hiring over 12,000 Fire & Aviation Management Seasonal Employees Nationwide

To learn more, visit: http://www.fs.fed.us/fsjobs/

If you enjoy working outdoors or ever dreamed of being a firefighter, now is the time to apply to the U.S. Forest Service

If you’ve searched for vacancies on USAJOBS 3.0, you may wonder why there are so many U.S. Forest Service opportunities. This is because the forests and grasslands they protect are spread across the country, and are cumulatively the size of Texas. The Forest Service manages 193 million acres of public land, provides assistance to state and private landowners, and maintains the largest forestry research organization in the world. They are seeking applicants for some 12,000 fire and aviation management temporary opportunities across 1,300 locations nationwide during the peak fire season months, May to September.

This hiring effort could not be accomplished without USAJOBS 3.0, which allows the Forest Service to post nationwide vacancy announcements that enable applicants to apply just once for multiple opportunities throughout the United States. Without this flexibility, the Forest Service would never be able to hire thousands of employees simultaneously to protect one of our greatest national treasures – our Forests.

Temporary employees have a very special place within the Forest Service. After all, most Forest Service career employees started out in temporary positions. Seeking a temporary or seasonal job with the Forest Service is a great way to learn about the different career opportunities available. It is also an excellent way to meet people within the organization and hone your skills so you will be well prepared for a permanent position, should you choose to pursue one.

We all know how valuable protecting our national lands is to the United States and to our future generations. These lands are protected by people just like you; people committed to ensuring our legacy remains as strong and vital as it is today. If you are interested in joining the Forest Service team, review and apply to their vacancy announcements on the USAJOBS website.
It includes periodic maintenance (inspection and analysis of equipment with associated adjustments), corrective maintenance, troubleshooting, repair and replacement of malfunctioning equipment, and certification. Many ETs work out of offices located at or near airports and on service equipment located on airports, in Air Traffic Control Towers (ATCT), Automated Flight Service Stations (AFSS), in open fields, or even on remote mountain tops. It is often necessary to drive significant distances (100-200 miles) to reach facilities. ETs also work in Air Route Traffic Control Centers (ARTCC) maintaining equipment within the facility. ETs normally maintain the electronics portion of facilities. Some ETs travel throughout a large geographic region of the country installing new electronic equipment at a wide range of facilities and remote locations.

After completing a summer internship, volunteer internships opportunities are also available throughout the year at selected offices.

With few exceptions, interns will be assigned to the 56 field offices. It is crucial that candidates are aware that the travel and commuting costs are the sole responsibility of the student.

Students seeking academic credits from their school through the internship program must submit their request prior to the beginning of the internship.

No matter what career path you eventually choose, serving as an FBI Volunteer Intern will be an experience you will never forget, and one that will benefit you in all of your future endeavors.

Selective Placement Factors: (skill, knowledge, ability or other worker characteristic basic to- and essential for – satisfacotry performance of the job). Selective Placement Factors (SFP) are a prerequisite to appointment and represent minimum requirements for a position. Applicants who do not meet it are ineligible for uther consideration. The SPF’s for this vacancy are: 1 Must have arresting authority 2. Must have a current valid driver’s license.

Additional information on the qualification requirements is outlined in the OPM Qualifications Standards Handbook of General Schedule Positions. It is available for your review on OPM’s web site at http://www.opm.gov/qualifications.

If you are using foreign education to meet qualification requirements, you must send a Certificate of Foreign Equivalency with your transcript in order to receive credit for that education.

Applicants may substitute education for experience at this grade level also. Six months of graduate-level education, directly related to the duties of this position, is qualifying for the GS-6 level. Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at the GS-6 level. To calculate, first identify the percentage of required graduate-level education you have earned. Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-6 level.
